Recruiting I Tips & Tools for Finding the Right People

February 3, 2024

Recruiting doesn't start only when you have a job opening.

You can start much earlier—even before you start looking for someone. Of course, the following tips also apply if you currently need someone for your team.

  • Get a clear picture of the roles on your team. Who’s missing, and which roles are still open? Use this information to create your own job posting.
  • Your team is the foundation for the new hires. Assign roles to ensure a smooth onboarding process and involve team members early on.
  • Create an avatar for yourself. Who do you want on your team, what kind of character, what strengths… A job is more than just a hodgepodge of tasks.
  • Make the job posting as personal as possible. List a specific person—or simply yourself—as the contact person.
  • Find a social media platform where this avatar might be and post or pin the ad right there.

Here's another way to structure a job posting:

  • GOAL: Start with the GOAL and PURPOSE of the job. WHY is this new role valuable?
  • IDENTIFICATION: HOW can you tell that the person identifies with the position, the task, and the responsibilities?
  • VALUES, ATTITUDES, BELIEFS: What values should your new employee bring to the job?
  • STRENGTHS AND SKILLS: What strengths should this person have, what kind of personality, and what expertise and experience should they bring to the role?
  • BEHAVIOR: Next comes the description of the tasks—that is, the WHAT—and the responsibilities—that is, the HOW—in which the new colleague should feel accountable.
  • GENERAL INFORMATION: Last but not least, include general information, such as the work location, salary (preferably as a range), and working conditions.

For your ad, use the same order as above. Here are a few ideas to get you started:

  • The headline – the title should stand out – like the title of an article, for example
  • The subtext of the headline explains the passage
  • Use the structure shown above —from “Goal – Purpose...” to “Framework.”
  • Make it as EASY AS POSSIBLE for the applicant. No resume, no photo—maybe just a LinkedIn account, if they have one, or a short letter explaining why they’re applying to your company,
  • PERSONAL: Write the job posting in your own name and include your phone number or email address at the bottom. People want to work with people.
  • LEADERSHIP & ONBOARDING: Effective leadership and a solid onboarding process are topics that frequently come up in job interviews. You can compile a list of these questions and address them directly in the job posting.
